399th
cadets meet Tuskegee Airmen. At a forum held
at Western Connecticut State University, cadets from the 399th Danbury
Composite Squadron heard the life stories of Lt Col Spann Watson and
Flight Officer Connie Nappier, Jr. These World War II veterans were two of
the legendary Tuskegee Airmen who saw combat over the skies of Europe.
They spoke of their passion for flying which led them to the air
corps, and their experiences of serving in a segregated military.
The term "Tuskegee Airmen" refers to all those who
were involved in the “Tuskegee Experiment,” the Air Corps program to
train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft during
World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators,
bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and the
personnel who kept the planes in the air during World War II. |
